Brass Ensemble Workshop with Brett Stemple

America-born tubist Brett Stemple was appointed Associate Professor of Music at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) in 2017 where he also serves as the Head of Brass & Percussion. Since 2023, he has also been an adjunct instructor for tuba in the graduate division at the Tianjin Juilliard School.

Brett has been a trailblazing force in several of South East Asia’s music institutions. He joined YST as Artist Faculty in 2004 and he was a founding member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) where he served as Principal Tuba for 19 seasons. With the MPO, he appeared on over 20 recordings on the BIS, Vox, and EMI labels, and was recognized as one of the foundations of the orchestra’s sound: “amongst the outstanding brass players, the tubist is particularly worth mentioning.” (Klassik.com).

Brett has maintained an active orchestral portfolio, performing regularly with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra (USA), the Macao Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (Singapore), among others.

Brett studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in tuba performance and a minor in philosophy. After receiving a Music Fellowship from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, he pursued graduate study with the renowned tuba educator Daniel Perantoni, graduating with a Master’s degree in Tuba Performance (1996) and a Doctor of Music degree in performance and pedagogy (2018).

In addition to being a fan of all forms of music, Brett enjoys reading poetry, philosophy and comparative mythology.

Brett is a Buffet Crampon Artist, performing on Melton Meinl Weston and B&S tubas.
